In UEFA meeting Boris Johnson lobbies for UK and Ireland to host 2030 World Cup
Boris Johnson wants the UK and Ireland to host the 2030 World Cup

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is understood to have increased his efforts for the UK and Ireland to host the 2030 World Cup by putting forward the suggestion to UEFA's president.

Johnson met with Aleksander Ceferin at Downing Street on Tuesday, according to reports

UEFA's boss is said to only want one candidate from Europe to avoid a split vote. So far the UK and Ireland are facing competition from Spain and Portugal who have also launched a joint bid.

Earlier this year, Johnson had promised to put £2.8m towards the bid and he told The Sun in March it would be a "wonderful" thing for the country.

He said: “We are very, very keen to bring football home in 2030. I do think it’s the right place.

“It’s the home of football, it’s the right time. It will be an absolutely wonderful thing for the country.”

The lobbying took place during Euro 2020 and ahead of England's crunch semi-final clash against Denmark.

The match will take place at Wembley with 60,000 fans present, having had its fan capacity increased in recent days.

And Johnson, who posted a video celebrating an England goal against Ukraine, wished the team the best of luck.

He said: “Gareth Southgate and the England squad have done the nation proud in the Euros, and tonight we will all be wishing them the best of luck in getting to the final. Bring it home!”

Labour leader Keir Starmer also shared the sentiment as he said: “Gareth Southgate and the squad will have the whole nation behind them tonight. Both on and off the pitch, they have shown the best of England.”
